Gelcolor by OPI in My Private Jet

Just a quick post today to show you what I had on my nails all through last week. Gelcolor by OPI is simply put, regular OPI colors in a gel form which is curable under UV/LED lights. The shade I have on in these pictures is My Private Jet, and is also in OPI's regular nail polish collection. It's a gorgeous shimmery smokey gray/brown.

For this application, I used a Gelish base and top coat and it worked fine. I did find the Gelcolor by OPI formula very thick and gloopy. It wasn't necessarily harder to work with, but did take a bit of time to get used to it. My usual choice of gel polish (Gelish, Quo by Orly Gels) is usually much more runny. In a way, I find the Gelcolor formula makes an opaque application easier since it's so thick. Some Gelish shades I have are so runny and sheer, it would take 5 coats in order to get an opaque finish, and that's just too time consuming. I'd definitely repurchase the Gelcolor by OPI in other shades - who doesn't want a classic OPI shade on their nails with absolutely no chips for more than a week? It's a shame they are only available on Ebay (as far as I can tell) at a reasonable price.

If you're interested in gel polishes, feel free to ask me questions. I'm not an expert, but if you're looking for some pointers, I could probably help you.

Hope your week is off to a good start! Mine has definitely been! :)

Gelish nails in Midnight Caller

Sometimes, when I just can't be bother to be fussing at my nails, when my week is looking too busy for a regular polish sesh, I use up my Sunday night to Gelish myself up.

For those of you who don't know, Gelish is a gel polish, as the name suggests, that must be cured under a LED or UV light. Yes, it does take a bit more time than a regular manicure, but if you're lucky, it can last up to three weeks. My nails grow too fast for that to be realistic, but I'm already happy with a truly chip free manicure for a week.

Gelish's Midnight Caller is a shimmery steel gray. I was worried the polish would be streaky, specifically because of the shimmery finish, but the polish was self-leveling, and didn't cause me any problems.

I really liked wearing this polish. I was versatile and neutral enough to match my closet's color palette, but it also had little bit of a kick with its beautiful shimmer.

I'm currently debating what color of Gelish I will be sporting for my sister's wedding. We're wearing navy dresses and I'm thinking either a soft pink, or a lavender. What do you think?

Quo by Orly Gels Very Vixen - a quick heads up!

This will be a quick one just because I wanted to get this swatch up for anyone who was curious. This is Very Vixen from the Quo by Orly Gel series. Very Vixen is a deep chocolate color with a hint of eggplant in it. It also, sadly, did not meet my expectations in terms of formula. While all the other Quo by Orly Gel colors I've tested were opaque in two coats and had a decent formula, Very Vixen was gloopy, streaky, gave me cuticle drag attitude, and would not give even coverage after three coats. So guys, if you're contemplating this one, I'd say you should pass and try a similar Gelish shade instead.

This did not float my boat. But at the same time, one of my favorite polish ever is a Quo by Orly Gel (reviewed here) so I'm not too upset about this dud. Brands have duds all the time. And as a beauty blogger, I'm bound to find them and tell you!

What's a brand you trust that has put out products that truly disappointed you?
